Rough Draft of Proposal
As a country america hasn't done much to make refugees
feel welcome. We took them in and gave them minimum
wage opportunities, but the attitudes of citizens are
atrocious. We have developed a stigma against Muslims,
forcing everyone under Islam into a box of terrorism and
hate. Many people don't seem to realize that muslims are
normal people and they have feelings just like the rest of
us. The muslims who fled Bosnia in the 90s not only had to
endure an ugly war, and leave their homes, (which most
can never return to), learn new languages and cultures,
etc, but they also endure hatred everyday.
American Media needs to stop demoralizing muslims (and
any people who are "different"in general) and show more
of the truth. That many Muslims that live in the US are
refugees & are by no means terrorists (or whatever other
bigoted stereotypes people have for them) We need more
community involvement for refugees & we need to teach
the population about them. Before my research I knew
nothing of Bosnia or refugees from the war. How many
other people out there don't know? How many people
could be unknowingly hurting them or making them feel
unwelcome? Something needs to change.
American Media needs to stop painting Muslims as horrible people, and start broadcasting
cultural awareness. Too often do you see and hear people spread rumors and bigotry about
people of Islam, and the fact of the matter is, most of it just is not true. Yes, there were terrorist
attacks, but those were preformed by extremists. That doesn't mean everyone under Islam is a
terrorist or wants all Christians to die. Many Americans have that stigma against Muslims
though, and all it serves is to fire up hate and negativity. Many Muslims living in America are
here because they had to escape a war torn country to save their lives. Instead of openly
throwing hate at them, we should be learning about them and accepting of their culture. There
are 6.2 million Muslims living in America. That's about a 2% of the total population here. That
means there's a 2% chance of running into someone of Islam. That may not sound like much,
but that means two out of every hundred people are Muslim here. That could be two co
workers, peers, people at the grocery store, etc. All those people hear about from non Muslims
is how much they are hated. If the people in America were to become more educated on the
matter they would stop spurting bigotry, and start being more accepting of those who are
"different".
