The extremists who devastated America in 2,002, have ruined the lives of those in the Middle East as well. Not all Muslims are terrorists as many would like to believe. Most of them are normal God-fearing people. It is against Islam to kill, and only extremists and your everyday psychopaths condone killing. They do not want to hurt Christians or Americans, they just want to live their lives. Is it right for people to judge or be bigoted and cruel to the Bosnian refugees, when all they did was end up here after fleeing a war ? Why do we allow our media to tear them down, instead of showing us who they truly are? Why do many Americans treat them like nothing just because of their religion? Aren't we past that as a people? Haven't we learned to be less bigoted, and more accepting?
Why, when these poor people came to this beautiful country, did we not provide them with therapy, and mental health screenings? War is a scary thing, and if the mind goes untreated, it can collapse. Some studies have been done to determine how many refugees suffer from PTSD, but many are still untested and untreated.(U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, July 5, 2007) In cases like Trolley Square, the effects of war can seep so deeply into one’s soul that they end up doing unspeakable things. (Sulejman Talović) was not alone. Many others from Bosnia are being treated as second class citizens. They are being bullied and their religion is attacked all the time. Although some refugees, like Enes Mujagic, have found ways to be strong and live their lives, there are many struggling. Even with help from therapists, and a strong heart, growing tough skin isn't enough. Americans need to change their attitudes. They need to see who they are hurting with their racism and hate. The media needs to stop catastrophizing the events in the Middle East, and those to do with people of Islam, and it needs to preach tolerance instead of hate.
About 2% of Americans are Muslims. Two out of every hundred people in the country are not accepted by the majority of the other 98. When a Doctor says there is only a 2% chance of survival, that percentage is very small, but when it is put towards population, it is quite large. There is a very high chance that someone part of the 98% could run into a Muslim at any given time. I work in a grocery store, and it provides me with an opportunity to witness the reactions towards people of Islam every day. People stop and stare, they gossip and say terrible bigoted things when they see a particular Muslim woman who wears a headscarf. Even if the woman can’t hear what they are saying, she notices the stares, and others around (like me) can hear every bigoted word, and they often are offended. The Muslim woman, and the people who throw hate at her are all good people. Many loving people have the wrong idea about Muslims and say things they don’t mean without even realizing it. If everyone were to be informed of the truth, much of the problem could be stopped.
People need not fear immigration. People need to love and accept those who are different, or those who are in need. If immigration ruins America, it would have been ruined the moment it started. Everyone is human. Everyone needs life, love, and safety. People need to live life in a ‘treat others as you would like to be treated’ fashion, not a “if I give to others I will lose everything’ fashion. As cheesy and idealistic as it is, the truth is people need to love. Love, understanding and acceptance can fix many of the worlds problems, especially in the case of those who immigrated here from the Bosnian war, or any war for that matter.
